I won’t call this a blog.
More of a musing.
Well, we probably will have to call it a blog and chuck it on the blogs page, but anyway.
I just wanted to get a couple of things out there
Reading is great – it’s such a great way to learn. Well, it’s probably the best way.
As a writer, you’d think I’d be all about just smashing through books. And I feel like there’s a bit of a stereotype, to grow and learn properly, you HAVE to read books.
You know what?
I haven’t read a full book for 5+ years. Yes, that includes my Year 12 English books 🙂 I’m kinda unsure whether that makes me an idiot or just time-efficient – but I just don’t feel like I have time to get through a book.
And yes, productivity-wise, I probably do, but I just have other priorities.
The good thing is though, that I feel like I’m still gathering and soaking in HEAPS of information. It’s not really about reading for 20 hours a week, as much as you’ll definitely learn plenty – I find it’s more about ensuring that you’re getting information that HELPS you.
I love learning, and I do a fair amount of it. But I don’t just read books for ‘leisure’. Fitting it into everyday life just doesn’t work for me.
And I feel like that’s ALL G. Why? Because there’s SO much great info and knowledge out there.
I’ve found some really great newsletters, insta and twitter accounts that provide really interesting, insightful and sometimes fun info!
Here are a couple of my faves at the mo:
– RichWebz weekly newsletter on how to work less (BIG YES).
– GrowthWithColby Instagram, tips for productivity.
– TheEthanHimka work productivity tips
– SocialWithPedro Insta and SM growth tips
– The Player’s Tribune sports opinion pieces, by athletes
– Katapault Maps – a German media company that make really interesting/informative maps and news for SM.
And when I REALLY wanna know something about something, I just go down a Google search wormhole, and find out everything I need to know in 20 minutes. It’s amazing the stuff we can learn just by looking on the interweb!
If someone makes you feel stupid for not being a ‘reader’, churning through self-help, productivity or business books, they’re probably the stupid one.
You can learn plenty from so many different avenues these days, so make the most of ‘em
So, the moral of the story is, don’t feel like you have to read book after book in order to learn – do what works for you best. Read stuff, make it a priority, but don’t be scared or feel stupid if you don’t read ALL the time.
At the end of the day, life (and copywriting) is about applying your knowledge and talents in the best way you can. If you learn great stuff from books, that’s epic, but if you don’t, that’s cool too.
Well there ya go, if you got through this and you agree, I’d love to hear from you.
Or, if you think what you just read was weird/stupid/shallow, let me know too 🙂
